The meaning of "caring about status"

People often say that one shouldn't care so much about status. My sense is that they're then usually thinking of people who strive for a very high status. But caring about status also includes wanting to avoid having a very low status. It seems to me that everyone cares about status in that sense, that it's almost impossible not to, and that encouraging people to not care about status in that form isn't necessarily a good idea. It also means that we’re more status-minded, in a sense, than it may seem.
